Biscuit porcelain doll with sleeping blue eyes and blonde hair. Dressed in a cream silk short-sleeved dress with a ribbon sash and a cream silk overcoat with three mother of pearl buttons, with matching ribbon-tied hat, and a coral necklace. Mould no. 403. This doll's biscuit porcelain head was created by the firm Simon & Halbig, who specialised in making doll's heads, and numbered all of their moulds. The firm was began specialising in dolls in 1869, in their two porcelain factories in Frafenhain and Hidburghausen, near Thuringia, Germany. They supplied dolls' heads to many well-known doll manufacturers, including Kämmer & Reinhardt, who purchased the firm of Simon & Halbig in 1920 and continued to produce dolls until 1932.
Provenance
Entered the Royal Collection in the 1920s or 1930s. Played with by Queen Elizabeth II as a child. Returned to the Royal Collection by Margaret MacDonald, nanny, and later dresser, to Queen Elizabeth II.
