This was described as 'a Prince of Brunswick' in the inventory of Kensington Palace of 1818; it certainly depicts Frederick, prince of Wales, and would appear to be by a continental artist in the orbit of Philippe Mercier (1689-1760) or Martin Maingaud (active 1692-1725), both of whose works are represented in the collection. It is also close to a John Smith print after a portrait by Georg Wilhelm Lafontaine, executed in Hanover in 1723. The Prince here appears standing in a landscape wearing armour, resting his left hand on his helmet, with an ermine-lined mantle and the riband and jewelled lesser George of the Order of the Garter.
