Her Royal Highness PRINCESS CHARLOTTE & PRINCE LEOPOLD of Saxe Coburg 1818
Stipple with hand-colouring | 59.8 x 43.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 605459
-
Stipple engraving with hand colouring of Princess Charlotte of Wales and her husband Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (later LeopoId I, King of the Belgians). The couple are depicted half length, in their box at Covent Garden Theatre. Princess Charlotte is shown in profile right with her hair up, decorated with flowers. She wears a white gown and red patterned Kasmiri shawl, held over her right shoulder and draped over the side of the box. Such scarves were renowned for the quality of their wool and valued for their lightweight warmth and softness. They were seen as a luxurious part of female dress in Europe by the early nineteenth century. To the right Prince Leopold sits with short hair, plain tie, coat with high collar, and sash over his left shoulder.
English inscription below, including publisher's address, 'London Published April 6th, 1818 by Mr. Dawe, 22, Newman Street.'. The date of publication was after Princess Charlotte's death, in November 1817, and on the day that Leopold was granted the style 'Royal Highness'.
Proof, with open lettering. For an earlier state see RCIN 605456; for another impression see RCIN 605457, and for a later state see RCIN 605458. After an original drawing by George Dawe which can be found in the Royal Collection Trust, see RCIN 913892. -
