Photograph of an overhead view of King George V (1865-1936) and Queen Mary (1867-1953) in the Gold State Coach travelling to their coronation at Westminster Abbey. The carriage is moving through Parliament Square, drawn by eight horses and followed by mounted soldiers. Soldiers and naval officers are standing to either side with spectators in stands behind. Beyond the crowds of spectators is the Palace of Westminster. The steeple of St Margaret's, Westminster can be seen to the right.
The coronation of King George V and Queen Mary took place at Westminster Abbey on 22nd June 1911. As part of the coronation celebrations the Festival of Britain was held at the Crystal Palace. The festival included displays of products from the British Empire, a historical pageant and athletics tournaments.Provenance
